ACOMA PUEBLO KOKOPELLI
WEDDING VASE BY
MILDRED ANTONIO
Dimensions:
5 1/4" Tall
2" Diameter
1" Wide at the Mouths
This handpainted vase is a beautiful work of art made by a registered
tribal member of the Acoma Pueblo Indian Tribe. Acoma Pueblo which is
one of the 19 pueblos in New Mexico.
Mildred Antonio, the artist, was born in 1937 and has been in the
trade for over 25 years. She does both traditional handcoiled pottery
as well as ceramicware like this vase.
Best known for intensely white with a matte finish and finely detailed
black cross-hatching, interlocking scrolls, and repeated geometrical
motifs, Acoma pottery often achieves Escher-like optical illusional
patterns adapted to the shape of the vessel. Typically, Acoma pottery
is extremely thin-walled and the thinnest in the Southwest.
This vessel is made of Acoma clay, from a secret source, is
hard-fired, making durable lightweight walls that ring if tapped. The
artist who created this piece used a mold to make this pottery so it
is truly ceramic rather than produced by the more time-consuming "coil
and scrape" method.
The Acoma tribe still resides in its aboriginal location on a
reservation of some 263,000 acres about an hour west of Albuquerque.
Sky City, the tribe's main pueblo, sits atop a 400-foot mesa high
above the surrounding plain. It vies with Taos and the village of
Oraibi in Hopi for the title of oldest continuously inhabited place
within the United States: this artist and her ancestors have lived in
this pueblo looking out over the awesome landscape for at least one
thousand years.

Chief Joseph Indian Art Trading Co.
Paul Smith and Ray Niblock founded and formed Chief Joseph in the
Spring of 2003. Since we formed Chief Joseph, we were determined to
offer valuable, true Native American handmade and handcrafted pottery,
carvings, and weaving using eBay, the worlds largest auction house. We
work hard to maintain a healthy mix of art covering a variety of
Southwest Indian Pueblo Tribes as well as the Navajo. Having both
lived in New Mexico for many years, we realize that personal
relationships are everything, and we focus on these personal
relationships with our vendors and artists. Doing so permits Chief
Joseph to purchase art directly from the artists or through reputable
trading partners at wholesale prices. Buying art from these sources
enables us to offer many items at beginning bids substantially below
the retail value. Our decided sales practice enables us to offer
authentic, gallery-quality art without the burden of a gallery price.
Plus, as long as we are able to make a modest profit, this practice
enables us to contribute to vital and traditional trades among the
various tribes and artists we represent. We are committed to keeping
these traditional arts alive and economically viable for the artists
and tribes who sponsor them. Our business philosophy is simple: our
word is our bond. We specialize in rapid shipping, and every item we
send to a customer is well-packed and insured. We do our best to
uphold the highest ethical standards in the business by our
participation in the eBay Power Seller Program and Square Trade. We
strive for each transaction to be pleasant, efficient, and friendly,
and to that extent we offer a satisfaction guarantee on every item we
sell. We hope you enjoy shopping with us.

Seed Pot
by Christine Nieto

Handcoiled, handcarved.

begun decades ago at the Santa Clara Pueblo.
The Santa Clara Pueblo, a Tewa speaking people, is located on the west
bank of the Rio Grande, 20 miles north of Santa Fe. It is known for
its contemporary expressions in the clay with the distinctive black
polished pottery like the one featured in this auction. Following the
tradition of the early Santa Clara potters, Christine produced this
spendid work of art.

Zuni Pueblo Lizard Pottery by Deidrick & Lorenda Cellicion.
Measures:
10 1/2" tall
10 1/2" diameter
5 1/2" wide at the mouth
Zuni pottery is typically white-slipped with a red base with various
designs. This pottery is somewhat atypical in that it has a textured
slip with lizards formed into the sides of the pot giving it a
three-dimensional aspect.
These two artists are very accomplished and although new to us, their
work is magnificent. Happy Bidding!
We do want to call your attention to the fact that we found a small
crack in one of the lizard's heads after we acquired it from the
artist which required very minor repair, which we made. Though the
pot is new, because we made a repair to the pot, we are listing at our
cost. The overall integrity of this vessel was not affected by the
crack or the repair. It is hardly noticable except upon very very
close inspection.
Shipping and handling are for a fixed cost that includes insurance.
Condition:
