Traditional, Hand-Made Lightning Pottery
by Jennifer Estevan
Dimensions:
7 Inches Tall
7 3/4 Inches Diameter
2 Inches Wide at mouth
Method:
Handcoiled, Handmade, Handpainted
Symmetry and Balance:
This olla is superbly done, symmetrical, and well-balanced.
Up on auction is this spectacular olla of traditional mimbres-era
design. This handpainted, handcoiled olla is made in the traditional
way that has been developed at the Acoma Pueblo over centuries. This
particular olla features spectacular skill in the handpainted desgins.
Best known for intensely white with a matte finish and finely detailed
black cross-hatching, interlocking scrolls, and repeated geometrical
motifs, Acoma pottery often achieves Escher-like optical illusional
patterns adapted to the shape of the vessel. Typically, Acoma pottery
is extremely thin-walled and the thinnest in the Southwest.
This vessel is made of Acoma clay, from a secret source, is
hard-fired, making durable lightweight walls that ring if tapped.
The artist who created and signed this olla is Jennifer Estevan. She
was born in 1963 and learned the trade from her mother, Virginia. She
likes to create traditional bowls and vases, and has been doing so for
16 years. Jennifer's favorite part of the work is finishing the pot
with the lightning designs.
She is a member of the Acoma Pueblo which is one of the 19 pueblos in
New Mexico. The Acoma tribe still resides in its aboriginal location
on a reservation of some 263,000 acres about an hour west of
Albuquerque. Sky City, the tribe's main pueblo, sits atop a 400-foot
mesa high above the surrounding plain. It vies with Taos and the
village of Oraibi in Hopi for the title of oldest continuously
inhabited place within the United States: this artist and her
ancestors have lived in this pueblo looking out over the awesome
landscape for at least one thousand years.

Chief Joseph Indian Art Trading Co.
Paul Smith and Ray Niblock founded and formed Chief Joseph in the
Spring of 2003. Since we formed Chief Joseph, we were determined to
offer valuable, true Native American handmade and handcrafted pottery,
carvings, and weaving using eBay, the worlds largest auction house. We
work hard to maintain a healthy mix of art covering a variety of
Southwest Indian Pueblo Tribes as well as the Navajo. Having both
lived in New Mexico for many years, we realize that personal
relationships are everything, and we focus on these personal
relationships with our vendors and artists. Doing so permits Chief
Joseph to purchase art directly from the artists or through reputable
trading partners at wholesale prices. Buying art from these sources
enables us to offer many items at beginning bids substantially below
the retail value. Our decided sales practice enables us to offer
authentic, gallery-quality art without the burden of a gallery price.
Plus, as long as we are able to make a modest profit, this practice
enables us to contribute to vital and traditional trades among the
various tribes and artists we represent. We are committed to keeping
these traditional arts alive and economically viable for the artists
and tribes who sponsor them. Our business philosophy is simple: our
word is our bond. We specialize in rapid shipping, and every item we
send to a customer is well-packed and insured. We do our best to
uphold the highest ethical standards in the business by our
participation in the eBay Power Seller Program and Square Trade. We
strive for each transaction to be pleasant, efficient, and friendly,
and to that extent we offer a satisfaction guarantee on every item we
sell. We hope you enjoy shopping with us.
