LOST WORLD PINBALL MACHINE Bally 1978 game vintage nr
Last Price: $1200.00 Ending Date and Time (GMT): 2004-11-02 22:50:15 LOST WORLD Pinball Machine â Bally 1978
Up for bid is a Lost World pinball game in superior, near-mint
condition! Gently and rarely used, this unit is of such a high
quality... finding one in this state is a rare thing indeed!
This unit has been valued at $1,500.00, but I will start the bidding
at $1,200.00 for a couple of reasons: (1) I want to attract buyers by
offering a lower starting price, and (2) I know that shipping costs
for something like this can be rather expensive, so hopefully this
lower starting price can help save some money if you need to make
shipping arrangements (see SHIPPING below).
To help you get started, following is a list of topics I cover
regarding the machine itself as well as terms regarding bidding,
payment, and shipping. Read through the description and feel free to
e-mail me if you should have any questions. Thanks for looking and
good luck bidding!

I. HISTORY OF THE GAME
The Lost World pinball machine was manufactured in 1978 with 10,330
units produced. A solid-state electronic machine with eye-catching
fantasy artwork, the game was a hit, and remains to this day one of
the most sought-after machines among collectors.
A few things set Lost World apart when it was released. First of all,
it was the first pinball machine to use the Ballyâs AS-2518-35 MPU.
Second, it was the first pinball machine to use electronic sounds,
instead of just simple chimes. But most of all, it was the first
pinball machine to use a four-color photographic process to produce
artwork for the backglass. Until that time, backglass artwork had been
very flat and without dimension. The artwork for Lost World blew all
that away.
The artist was Paul Faris, who is now well-known for his artwork on
many other pinball machines (Paragon, Xenon, Goldeneye, Hook, and
others), and whose artwork has become more and more collectible as
time goes by. At an expo in Chicago, Paul humorously confessed that he
had based the artwork for Lost World on himself and his wife.
II. OVERALL CONDITION OF THE MACHINE
This machine is in superior near-mint condition. There are a few signs
of gentle use that are listed below in their respective sections, but
there are no major flaws in performance or in the cosmetic appearance
of the machine. In fact, the appearance of the machine is amazing!
Colors are vibrant and bold, and the backglass is just perfect (see
THE BACKGLASS below). Gameplay is fast, clean, and sharp.
Overall, this unit scores a 9.5 out of 10. Some minor touch-ups would
make this a mint condition game.
III. THE BACKGLASS
One of the strongest assets of this unit is the condition of the
backglass. Usually older pinball games have some flaking or
discoloration in the artwork that detracts from the overall value.
However, there are no noticeable flaws in the backglass artwork! In
fact, only upon very close examination I have only found three
pinpricks in the artwork. These are so small you have to be right up
on the back of the backglass to notice them. These pinpricks are not
noticeable at all when viewed from the front or when the game is lit
up. Color is still rich and vibrant with no discoloration or fading.
Collectors agree, much of the value in a pinball machine is wrapped up
in the condition of the backglass. Plus, this backglass will continue
to increase in value since the artwork is by well-known pinball artist
Paul Faris (see HISTORY OF THE GAME above).
IV. THE CABINET
When pinball games are placed in an arcade, they usually end up with
scrapes, nicks, bangs, and dents... not to mention that they usually
reek of cigarette smoke. Not so with this machine! This unit has a
near-perfect cabinet, both on the main unit and also on the backbox!
The artwork has been fully preserved with no cosmetic damage. There
may one or two tiny nicks, but you have to really be looking to find
them. The cabinet is clean and free from any discoloration,
smoke-smells, etc. Chances are that this unit never found its way into
the arcade.
V. THE PLAYFIELD
The playfield is in excellent condition and only shows the slightest
wear. The only telltale sign of use is that there are some very fine
places on the main area of the playfield (the open area in front of
the flippers up to the pop bumpers) where the paint is a bit faded,
but can easily be remedied with some light touch-up paint if someone
was willing to take the time to apply it. Fortunately, there are no
areas where paint has cracked or peeled so that the ball would
continue to damage the playfield.
The pop bumpers show some slight discoloration on the tops.
The plastics are all very clean and in pristine condition.
VI. INTERNAL COMPONENTS
The internal components of the machine are all in great condition.
They do show signs of age, but show no signs of corrosion or other
damage. The MPU board looks as if it was replaced. There are two knobs
located within the backbox that control sound (one is volume, another
provides an echo effect to add depth). The tilt mechanism works clean
and can be as sensitive as you want it.
All LED displays are bright and fully functional. The LED display for
credits has flickered a bit before, but if you make sure the
connection is firmly in place, this will resolve the problem. This is
an easy fix.
All solenoids work properly and the machine performs its diagnostic
tests just fine.
There are many different options you can set on the MPU board which
govern sound and gameplay.
VII. OVERALL PLAY OF THE MACHINE
This machine plays great! All action is fast and clean. Features two
flippers, three pop bumpers, two kick-out holes, one roll-under
spinner, and one messenger ball (The Dragonâs Den). Performance is
extremely crisp.
There are six targets (A, B, C, D, E, F) which can be hit in different
combinations to activate different features on the playfield (special,
extra ball, bonus score, etc.). Very challenging. You can develop some
real skill working on specific target shots.
About 99% of all connections and gameplay logic appear to be in fine,
working order. One problem is that when counting down your bonus, the
machine sometimes does not light up the 3 and 2 lights, but these
lights light up fine when advancing bonus. This quirk appears only at
the end of each ball when counting down bonus. This is probably due to
a loose connection and is more than likely an easy fix.
VIII. BONUS ITEMS
Included with the pinball machine are two bonus items!
The first is a reproduction of the original Lost World flyer. This
flyer is double-sided and has been laminated. It mentions different
features of the game, different ways of scoring, and shows a map of
the playfield. Put this on display as a great conversation piece!
Also included is a reproduction of the original technical manual. The
pages have been placed in protective sleeves and all put together in a
three-ring binder. You can work on your machine and not worry about
getting the manual all dirty! Plus, all electronic blueprints have
been included.
IX. TERMS OF BIDDING
Please bid only if you are serious about purchasing this machine.
Bidders with a feedback less than 10, or with excessive negative
feedback, may have their bids cancelled. The seller reserves the right
to allow exceptions to this rule depending on verification via e-mail
or other contact.
X. TERMS OF PAYMENT
Please read carefully.
Winner must submit payment within 10 days of winning. Payment should
be made with PayPal or money order. I would prefer money order since
PayPal will charge a fee for the transaction. Please contact me before
payment if you wish to pay via PayPal. Money orders received later
than 10 days after the deadline will be accepted if received in
envelope postmarked by the deadline. If payment is not received within
10 days, item will be relisted and winner will be reported as a
non-paying bidder and negative feedback will be left. Please do not
bid if you cannot abide by these conditions.
XI. SHIPPING
You may arrange to pick up the machine here in Lexington, KY, or you
may arrange for a shipping company to come by and pick it up.
Unfortunately, I cannot provide crating, etc. myself, but I will do
all I can to help you or a shipping company load the machine and send
it on its way. If you need help in locating a shipping company here in
Lexington, I will do my best to assist you.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me and I will post
any important information for others to read.
As always, thanks for looking and good luck bidding!
