This 1878 Morgan Dollar, 8 Tail Feathers graded Gem MS65 by PCGS is an
outstanding coin from the Morgan Dollar series' first year of issue!
This gorgeous gem rarity features a strong, solid strike, original
frosty luster, and velvet-smooth surfaces on both sides.
On all previous United States coinage, the American Eagle was always
shown with an odd number of tail feathers. The 1878 8-TF Morgan's high
relief made the coin difficult to stack. The conversion from 8 tail
feathers to 7 was also accompanied by a change to a much more shallow
relief in the Morgan Dollar die.
Back in 1878, just 750,000 Morgan Dollars were minted with 8 Tail
Feathers, while the remaining 9.7 million were minted with the 7 TF
reverese, making the 8 TF variety over 13 times scarcer than the 7-TF
type! Today, only a small fraction have survived to grade at Gem MS65
with reputable professional grading services like PCGS, and just 26
pieces have received higher grades. Collectors Universe lists the
current price of the 1878 Morgan Dollar "8 Tail Feathers" variety
graded Gem MS65 at $1,500. This already is a great bargain, especially
when compared with the next highest grade, MS66, which commands a
steep $12,500 price tag:
