Here's the real deal on this piece.....I have NO idea what this is or
even what to call it!!! I was told these types of pieces were highly
collectible and so I found one and have hung on to it as I really
don't know what to say..........NO RESERVE AUCTION!!! It looks to me
like an ORANGE strawberry designed cannister or jar.........possibly
for biscuts, cookies, coffee, or tea? I really do like to stem for
the lid knob and the little ORANGE strawberry types for handles on
each side. It almost has a majolica type of design. Bamboo type of
handles...attached to the strawberry handles......... Made in Japan is
printed on bottom.........I can tell this piece is quite old and in
very good condition. It does have crazing inside this piece as well
as some staining which geared me towards thinking that it might had
been used for tea or coffee. It measures approx. approx. 7 1/2" tall
7 1/2" wide including the handles - bottom base is 4 1/2". Maybe I
just don't know all my fruit....if there's something out there like a
strawberry that's pumpkin orange......please let me know. It is at
least a conversation piece. I thank you for letting me ramble and

This is one of the popular cookie jars produced by Shawnee Pottery prior
to its closure in 1962. Winnie the Pig has a green collar and hat,
brown base, no gold and stands 11-1/2" tall. The top is a piggy bank
and holds coins in the head while the base holds cookies. The base has
a chip on the rim which cannot be seen when you place the top on.(this
can be seen in the Pic) There was a repair to the hat and was
repainted at some time. (Look at the Pic and see if you can find it)
The person who did it, did a very good job and you would have to look
very hard to find it. This cookie jar is listed in "The Complete
Cookie Jar Book" on page 133 for $350. This is a great item for the
piggy bank and or cookie jar collector.
According to "Shawnee Pottery" by Bev & Jim Mangus, the company
apparently began operations at just the right time. In 1937 Americans
were "beginning to feel hostility towards Germany and Japan and their
imports. 'Buy American' campaigns were conducted". Thus laid the
foundation for Shawnee to produce pottery and dinnerware for the
United States. Companies such as Woolworth, McCrory, S. S. Kresge and
Sears Roebuck and Company all became customers/outlets for Shawnee
Pottery, helping the fledgling company become established. Again,
according to the Magnus book, the various companies supplied the
designs for their products and promised to purchase them.

head is still in the same condition as when it came from the factory.

Vintage California Original The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe Cookie
Jar
Nice estate sale treasure, adorable cookie jar that displays one of an
all-time favorite nursery rhymes 'Old Mother Hubbard'. It does have
a couple chips on the lid and the chipped places are yellowed with
age. Some of the paint is wearing off and a ding or two in places but
over all in very good condition. The inside is glossy and in excellent
condition. It measures about 12" tall x 11" (toe to heel) x 6" side to
side. It is heavy weighing over 5 pounds unpacked. It is marked USA
874. It is an original and not a reproduction. There have been several
makers of this particular cookie jar. It is definately popular.
